The Theatre of the Estates (Stavovské divadlo) is one of the most beautiful historic theatres in Europe. The building was initiated by the enlightened aristocrat František Antonín, Count Nostic Rieneck. The building took less than two years and the theatre was opened in 1783 with the first performance of Gotfried Ephraim Lessing's civic tragedy "Emilia Galotti". Its original name was Hraběcí Nosticovo divadlo - Count Nostic's Theatre. This project - one of extraordinary importance for the Prague of its day - was in accord with the spirit of the end of the 18th century, when national theatres were being built at the European courts, in capital cities and cultural centres in the spirit of the enlightened idea that a theatre open to the general public was a moral institution demonstrating the nation´s cultural level. Over the building is the inscription "Patriae et Musis" - to the Homeland and the Muses. This motto shows the greatness of the founder's original intention, nor has it lost its validity today. After the theatre was linked to the National Theatre it became a natural counterpart to that theatre's motto - "The nation to itself". The site chosen for building the Theatre of the Estates was one traditional for theatrical performances, history of the Bohemian kingdom. He built the theatre with the idea that German drama and Italian opera should be promoted there, though he did not object in principle to plays in other languages being preformed there. The Theatre of the Estates played in German until 1920, when it was taken over by the Czechs and affiliated to the National Theatre.
On December 21, 1834, the song "Kde domov muj" (Where is my home) which later became the Czech national anthem was presentated on this stage for the first time. Today drama, opera and ballet are performed here.
